True. And, as a resident, that board member has a unique knowledge of the community that outside directors don’t have. When that knowledge is ignored, or not offered up, valuable insight is lost.

The resident who is on a board, like all board members, has a duty is to the organization, not representing any residents. That said, they have perspective of being a resident.

Resident of a CCRC

At Medford Leas we have a trustee who was put forward by the Resident Association, who had professional experience (healthcare) they were seeking. Once she joined the board, her allegiance has been strictly to the board and administration. She doesn't consider herself a "voice" on the board for residents.

At Goodwin House, we have a had a residents serving as a trustees over the last 12 years or so. This person is not a resident representative. There is clear separation of duties. The chair of our resident council is a non-voting resident voice on the board of trustees. We also have residents who serve on several of the board's working committees.

The chair of the resident council reports back to the council on what she has learned at the board meetings. The resident who is a trustee does not.

At Friendship Village Chesterfield Missouri the corporate resident board member is not required to be a member of the Residents' Council but can be. The most recent resident board member was not a member of the of the Residents' Council, a Resident Representative or Working Committee Chair, but reported at meetings and served as a part of the Residents' Council Executive Committee. The incoming resident board member is a member of the Residents' Council.

At Ingleside at King Farm in Rockville, MD, the resident Director is not a member of the Resident Council. She does normally attend the meetings and report to it, but she is not a voting member.

Are any CCRC/LPC communities that have residents as corporate board members who require that those same residents are members of the resident council board?
