New Canaan Residents Push Back on Waveny’s Proposed Life Plan Community
Waveny LifeCare Network has outlined a concept for a 150-unit Life Plan Community on a 50-acre parcel owned by the town. The concept includes 134 independent-living residences and 16 apartments in two cottages, with access to on-campus health care. The proposal is not yet a formal application: Waveny has not submitted a plan to the town.
Some New Canaan residents have organized a “Hands off Waveny” campaign and petition, arguing that the project would take away open space and affect natural habitat. Waveny says the parcel under consideration is separate from the 130-acre area designated as Waveny Park and is currently used as a town mulch field. The Conservation Commission asked the Town Council to consult it before taking action on a lease or approval. How should a town weigh local demand for continuing-care housing against concerns about public land and environmental impact?
