AI Literacy Is Rising Across Aging Services

A new survey from LeadingAge's Center for Aging Services Technologies (CAST) and Ziegler Link•age Funds shows that AI literacy among not-for-profit aging services organizations has jumped dramatically. The percentage of respondents reporting meaningful AI capabilities rose from 13% in 2025 to 55% this year, while those with only basic or limited AI competence dropped from 79% to 38%. The survey also found that nearly three-quarters of organizations now have some form of data governance program, up significantly from last year. Organizations are prioritizing operational efficiency and data integration over resident-facing AI applications, following a "technology-focused in the back of the house, human-centered in the front of the house" approach. However, while over 80% define success measures before implementing technology, only 43% regularly revisit those measures after deployment. The findings suggest that Life Plan Communities are becoming more intentional about technology adoption, but work remains in evaluating outcomes and building enterprise-wide AI capabilities.

NIFS Launches Nationwide 'Move Your Mood' Initiative to Promote Mental Wellness Through Movement

The National Institute for Fitness and Sport (NIFS) has launched "Move Your Mood," a free nationwide event on October 6, 2026, during Mental Health Awareness Week. The initiative challenges senior living communities to complete 5,000 resident workouts in a single day, with each community setting its own one-day workout record. The program was inspired by a NIFS survey finding that 50% of senior living wellness professionals have seen an increase in residents experiencing mental health challenges like anxiety and depression, and 55% expect the need for mental health resources to keep growing. Participants will learn how movement can improve mood, reduce stress, support brain health, enhance sleep, and strengthen social connections. Communities can register through the Move Your Mood event page. For Life Plan Community residents, this event offers a structured opportunity to engage in physical activity while supporting mental well-being alongside peers across the country.

Occupancy, Development, Leadership: Inside 3 Top Senior Living Trends for 2026

At the first SHN TRENDS event in Chicago, industry leaders identified three key trends shaping senior living in 2026. First, occupancy is approaching 90% in major markets, but high fill rates don't guarantee profitability and create higher operational expectations. Second, development remains near historic lows, though experienced companies with patience and vertical integration are still getting projects built. Third, leadership is scarce but can be developed through experience, exposure, and succession planning. The "baby boomer age wave" may be more of an "age high tide" — gains will vary by market, sector, and operator. Ventas executive Justin Hutchens described a new operating standard focused on "zero lost revenue days," resident and staff well-being, and data-driven management. For Life Plan Community residents, the trends signal that as demand grows, operators face increasing pressure to deliver quality care, manage costs, and plan for leadership transitions that will shape the future of their communities.
