According to the 2025 Lifestyle Survey by The Senior Citizens League (TSCL), about 33% of older Americans regularly volunteer — higher than the 28% of the general population. About a quarter of senior volunteers are "super volunteers," participating at least weekly.

The survey found that seniors who volunteer, regardless of frequency, are significantly more likely to report high life satisfaction and positive emotions like enjoyment and social connection, while experiencing less loneliness and sadness. The Mayo Clinic links volunteering to better physical and mental health, lower depression rates, and reduced stress.

Most senior volunteers serve with charities and nonprofits (56%), followed by religious organizations (34%). The article encourages finding a role that fits your priorities and skills — whether ongoing or occasional.

For Life Plan Community residents, volunteer opportunities often exist right on campus. What volunteer activities does your community offer, and have you found they improve your sense of purpose and connection?
